A Clinical Observation of the Inguinal Hernia


Abstract
This study is a review and analysis of 65 cases of the inguinal hernia treated at the department of general surgery; Chungnam National University Hospital from July, 1972 to July, 1977.
The result were as follows:
1. The incidence of the external abdominal hernia was about 2.2% of the total patients. 2. Among 74 cases, The incidence of the inguinal hernia was 65L;cases(87.8%).
3. The location of the inguinal hernia: 46 cases(70.8%) in the right, 14 cases(21.5%)
in the left, 5 cases(7. 7%) bilaterally. Indirect inguinal hernia was 62 cases(95. 5%), dir¡þect inguinal hernia 3 cases(4.5%).
4. The incidence was high in male than in female by the ratio of 8:1.
5. The chief complaints were inguinal mass, scrotal swelling, abdominal pain and dist¡þension, nausea and vomiting.
6. The incidence of incarceration is 11 cases(45. 7%), strangulation is 2 cases(3. 0%) and 10 cases of all patients had hydrocele.
7. 19 cases(29.2%) of all hernia were repaired by high ligation, 30cases(46.1%) by Bassini, 12 cases(18.4%) by MaVay, and 4 cases(6. 1o) by Ferguson. 8. The mean postoperative hospital day was 6.8 days.
9. The postoperative complication(5 cases of 70 cases) were wound infection 2 cases, hematoma 1 case, phlebitis 1 case and recurrent hernia 1 case.
